Tonglen is a helpful practice that can be used in everyday life. One of the fundamental enlightened ideas Buddha revealed is that all sentient beings suffer. That being said, what does one do with one’s suffering?
The Tonglen practice provides a solution. It is a practice of taking and giving, that offers us a solution to suffering. It teaches us how to use our suffering to open our hearts and find that we are not alone in our suffering, but are joined together through the union of compassion and lovingkindness.
The meaning of Tonglen, taking and giving, shows us to meet our suffering, take it in, meet it with compassion and give it away. We release it and do not hold onto it. In our daily lives we can use Tonglen on the spot whenever wherever, we meet suffering and find peace in our open-heartedness.
Greer is an active member of Insight Meditation Community of Lewes and has been on a path of spiritual discovery her entire life. She has been meditating for more than 50 years and is a Bön Dzogchen practitioner through the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. She learned the Tonglen practice from international teacher and author Pema Chödrön in the early 1990s. She uses Tonglen as a support for her clients dealing with pain and personal suffering in her private practice at Shore Wellness in Lewes.
The suggested dana is $10.
