What can we learn from calming the body and mind? Rather than treating tranquility and wisdom as separate, mindfulness of breathing practice treats them as two sides of the same coin, and guides us to cultivate them in a mutually supportive way. Attention to the breath then becomes a dynamic bridge not only between body and mind, but between tranquility and insight. Calmness clears the ‘muddy water’ of our experience, while insight prevents stagnation, and as insight deepens, unshakeable calm can be present. A Friday evening talk/practice and following Saturday daylong retreat will give us an opportunity to explore the relationship and balance between tranquility and insight. The day-long session will include guided and silent meditations, walking meditation, talks and sharing in community.
