Tonglen is a helpful practice that can be used in everyday life. One of the fundamental enlightened ideas Buddha revealed is that all sentient beings suffer. That being said, what does one do with one’s suffering?
The Tonglen practice provides a solution. It teaches one to use awareness and breath to release one’s own and others’ sufferings through loving kindness or “metta.” In its design, one learns how to use personal suffering and the power of on-the-spot compassion to help bring compassion in mediation or when going about daily activities, for oneself and others.
Greer is an active member of Insight Mediation Community of Lewes and has been on a path of spiritual discovery her entire life. She has been meditating for more than 45 years and is a Bon Dzogchen practitioner through the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. She learned the practice of Tonglen from international teacher and author Pema Chodron in the early 1990s.
